Balanced forward: a student’s experience

I wanted to share this lovely email from a student who was learning to experience the beautiful feeling of being balanced into the instrument, rather than the weight falling back towards the pianist.

I discovered something this morning I wanted to share with you. After finding the point of balance and distribution of weight and so forth, I was practising this morning, and I found that I balance (fall off) backwards. This is why my playing feels so insecure I feel.

If you are playing forward into the piano, it feels as though the piano and you are “one” and you aren’t fighting with it all the time.
I don’t know how else to explain it.

If I can fix the thumb and the balance problem that my playing will be much better and I will feel more secure.

What a beautiful experience. Don’t we all seek that experience of feeling “one” and peaceful with the piano!
